In the storied enclave of Waldo, where the rhythm of Kansas City pulses with a quiet, neighborly charm, there stands a sanctuary not of silent stone, but of flour, butter, and memory: McLain’s Bakery. To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan’s hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain’s, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain’s chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and

We hired McLain's as our wedding cake vendor and could not be more pleased with the experience. We ended up getting a 5-layer cake (and 5 FLAVORS!!) which was one of my favorite pieces of our wedding. We also did the to-go tasting option which was so fun and helpful for choosing the flavors (did I mention we had 5!!) Their team was communicative, answered all my questions, and made the day-of process easy and seamless. Also LOVE that you get to order a cake on your 1-year anniversary.

Love this spot. They do great breakfast snacks, I usually order the homemade biscuits and gravy and they are so fluffy and yummy and the white gravy isn’t too salty or peppery which I like. The breakfast burrito is a good size and well balanced. The avocado toast is a fave although it is an avocado blend spread rather than fresh plan avocados. The salmon toast is also a fave, the capers are sort of dried and crunchy (but still caper flavor) the coffee comes separately to your food you have to get up and get that but it’s a lovely space to sit and eat and there is an outside spot for you to bring your dogs or just enjoy the sunshine. There is also an outside window to order your food/coffee as no dogs are allowed inside - even just to order. Love this spot.

I love a good bakery and McLain's had some pretty amazing choices with equally great prices, too. The retail section had so many cute holiday-themes goodies. I got a chocolate croissant to pair with my coffee and it was the best start to my morning. 🥐

McLain’s Bakery is a staple that I visit every time I’m in Kansas City. The food is always fresh, and the overall vibe makes it a great spot for breakfast, a quick bite, or even to hang out and get some work done. The coffee is solid, the pastries are delicious, and the atmosphere is consistently welcoming. I’ll definitely keep coming back and always recommend it.

Ordered a cake from McLain’s for my graduation celebration and everyone raved about it! I got to customize the cake and their website made it very easy. Pickup was smooth and the cake turned out better than expected. I can’t wait to order again!

The perfect place for breakfast or brunch or if you just want a coffee and some fresh bakery items. Loved the vibe of the place and service was fast despite the busy morning crowd. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone.

We had the pleasure of using McLain's Bakery for our wedding cake and beautiful royal icing cookies. From our initial consult with Grace to our tasting, where the staff graciously accommodated my parents attending with us, to the final products, we were impressed by the clarity of communication, support, encouragement, and delivery. We selected almond cake with raspberry filling and almond buttercream, and McLain's delivered a gorgeous cake in the Lambeth style we'd requested. The cake was perfect, beautiful, and delicious. The cookies -- in shapes of wedding rings, champagne glasses, and wedding cakes -- were also a huge hit. We can't thank the team enough for being an integral part of our special day. We were also delighted to learn that on our first wedding anniversary, they'll provide a small cake in the same flavor -- so wonderful and exciting! Thank you, McLain's! We're your biggest fans!

Best Chocolate Croissant and Cheese Danish! The croissant and cheese danish were so amazing! I’ve eaten here before but never right when they open at 7 AM. This is the key me thinks. Get here when everything is fresh. Divine pastry experience!

Starve yourself and diet a few days before visiting this place. What a wonderful locally owned bakery and cafe. I wish every town had something like this. They have a few other locations in the KC metro area. This location was in a corner shop surrounded by neighborhoods. Very cool vibe. It was a little difficult to find parking during the lunch hour so be prepared to circle the block. The chicken salad sandwich was unique with carrots added in, but I found it to be very tasty. All the sweets I had were top notch. I got a wide variety to take home for my family to sample. Everything was excellent and yummy. The only thing we weren’t a complete fan of was the cinnamon roll. We found it to be very dry and more bread like. It was not the soft and gooey variety with heavy icing like we prefer. But that’s just our preference.
